Eco-Conscious, Recycled Plastic Decking

Discover how Trex composite decking makes a difference

Composite Decking

Sustainability Built Into Every Board

For more than 30 years, Trex has pioneered composite decking made from 95% recycled and reclaimed materials. That innovation reshaped the industry and set a new expectation for what high-performance, lower-impact outdoor living can be. Today, homeowners can choose Trex knowing their deck is designed to reduce the strain on natural resources, require less upkeep, and last for years to come.

Always Green - Trex Recycling

We make Trex® eco-friendly composite decks from an innovative blend of up to 95% recycled plastic film and reclaimed sawdust—that’s almost the whole thing. Trex offers consumers a truly environmentally responsible choice with our recycled components. Being green is in our DNA. We've been this way nearly 30 years, well before green was a buzzword. Because in the end, all of us want to look out on our decks and know that we’ve done our part.

How is Trex Composite Decking Made?

Eco Ingredient 1: Composite Decking

Recycled Plastic Film

Trex is one of the largest recyclers of plastic film in North America. Since our inception, Trex has recycled over 5.5 Billion pounds of plastic film. That's the weight of 650,000 hippos.

Our decking incorporates reused plastic sourced from:

  • Post-consumer materials
  • Post-commercial waste
  • Post-retail streams

This recycled plastic is combined with reclaimed wood to create durable, low-maintenance boards built for decades of outdoor use.

Eco Ingredient 2: Composite Decking

Reclaimed Wood

Trex does not harvest virgin timber for our products. All wood content is reclaimed — meaning it comes from waste products or byproducts of other industries, such as flooring and cabinet manufacturing.

At our Fernley facility, orchard trees that have reached the end of their productive life are repurposed into Trex composite material. This circular approach supports farmers by providing an efficient, environmentally responsible solution to wood disposal.

How It Becomes Trex Composite Decking

Recycled plastic and reclaimed wood are combined, heated, blended, and formed into strong, weather-resistant boards. This process:

  • Diverts waste from landfills
  • Reduces demand for virgin materials
  • Delivers high-performance decking with consistent quality

Trex composite decking continues to create durable, low-maintenance, decks for homes around the world.
